Hermès CEO Likens LVMH’s Buyout Attempts to ‘Rape’

Hermès CEO Patrick Thomas.

At a press conference held at the Hermès headquarters in Paris this morning, Hermès CEO Patrick Thomas shared some of his personal musings on the company's future, particularly regarding LVMH's aggressive takeover attempts. Reiterating his previous calls for LVMH's Bernard Arnault to reduce his shareholdings, he reminded the audience that Arnault has insisted his intentions toward Hermès are "peaceful." Thomas then composed yet another flowery metaphor for the situation: “If you want to seduce a beautiful woman, you don’t start by raping her from behind,” he said. The audience reacted to his statement with audible gasps, according to Women's Wear Daily.

Thomas also spoke candidly about his thoughts on delisting the company. “I will not hide from you that personally, I think delisting would make sense for Hermès,” he said, adding, “We have not discussed this option amongst ourselves ... Rest assured, this is not an announcement. I am simply thinking out loud."
