The Royal Wedding Live Blog: Kate Wore McQueen

Kate in an Alexander McQueen dress by Sarah Burton, with her sister, Pippa, holding her train.

Today feels a little bit like when the Sex and the City movie premiered: We were totally sick of it by the time it happened, but then everyone went and saw it and liked it anyway! Pretty dresses! Bad hats! Celebrities! (See pictures here. And see pictures of Kate wearing her dress here.) Anyway, isn't it good to know on this morning of April 29, 2011, that one women, Catherine Middleton, can be so famous just for getting married? Work never seemed to suit her anyway. So off with the live blog! We'll get through this together.

4:47 a.m. Guests are arriving at Westminster Abbey, and already there is a deluge of bad pastel menswear. (Elton John gets a pass for his pastel yellow vest because he's the man, however.)

4:51 a.m. David and Victoria Beckham are already inside, not wearing pastels. Both look very chic with their hair slicked back very tightly, and Victoria, wearing a modest navy dress, has a little fascinator attached to the top of her forehead, as though she needed something to stop her from running into walls and other hard surfaces. Her shoes are custom Christian Louboutin. David is wearing a Ralph Lauren suit. That's the American spirit! This whole thing is really for us, right?

4:57 a.m. Ooh, Vera Wang is on CNN to aid in dress speculation! "I'd love to see her in something also from McQueen. I feel that is such a brilliant, brilliant house," she says. "I'm quietly praying for that." Quietly?

5:02 a.m. Hats with feathers and netting should have been banned (or at least all the ones we're seeing in there right now). Victoria Beckham had the right idea.

5:05 a.m. David Cameron just arrived! He kicks off all the big arrivals and will shortly be followed by William and Harry, who are probably polishing each other's suit buttons in a foyer right now. Samantha Cameron looks lovely in a form-fitting turquoise dress.

5:08 a.m. NBC just had a close-up of David and Victoria. Looking good, guys! That front row needs you!

5:10 a.m. NBC has decided that Diana would not have upstaged Kate Middleton, if she were here. William has said, Matt Lauer says, he thinks about his mom every day. Well, lots of the world has been too, lately.

5:12 a.m. WILLIAM IS LATE. He was supposed to come out at 5:10 EST and it's now 5:12. But there he is in the car with Harry! They're waving awkwardly. One anchor calls it "electrifying."

5:15 a.m. The dress speculation seems to be focused heavily around Sarah Burton, the creative director of Alexander McQueen. The Telegraph's Hilary Alexander believes the mysterious woman hiding under a giant fur-trapper hat seen going into Kate Middleton's hotel last night was in fact Burton.

5:19 a.m. WILLIAM IS OUT OF THE CAR. God his jacket is bright red — it's like he's trying to take attention from the bride! He and Harry, wearing navy and lots of gold ropes, removed their hats as he entered the Abbey. Time to marvel at how much more hair Harry has. He could have used a comb, in fact.

5:22 a.m. Did William have a hairdresser? His locks are so neatly combed.

5:25 a.m. Kate's mom Carole just left her hotel! She looks lovely in what looks like a very pale ice blue skirt suit with coordinating wide-brimmed hat.

5:28 a.m. NBC found some folks from middle America with a baby wearing a onesie that says "Team Kate." Well, now we have a taste of how Our People are being represented over there.

5:33 a.m. Vera calls Carole's outfit "expected," and says it reminds her of what Camilla wore to marry Prince Charles. Her mother-of-the-bride glow is her best accessory! Or is that her tan?

5:35 a.m. Kate's brother James is also wearing a yellow pastel vest, though this may not be the most popular pastel vest hugh in the house. Every color of the Easter egg does seem to be represented here, of course.

5:38 a.m. The "younger royals" — friends and cousins of the princes — just pulled up in their bus. Thank you, Anderson Cooper, for making so much fun of those buses.

5:40 a.m. Camilla is arriving in her blue Anna Valentine dress and Philip Treacy hat! She's with Charles and the crowd seems excited about them, which "never would have happened 10 or 15 years ago," says CNN.

5:44 a.m. Camilla's hat looks like a sombrero.

5:45 a.m. The queen is in the car! She is wearing the most joyous bright yellow color and matching hat. She looks like she's done this a million times and can only get so excited about it.

5:47 a.m. The flower girls are in the car and they are adorable in their little white puffy-sleeved dresses. Also, terrified!

5:49 a.m. The queen is arriving in the Abbey to some trumpets with a very sparkly brooch. There are definitely not enough sparkles in that joint. Brooch win.

5:51 a.m. OH MY GOD KATE IS IN THE CAR. Her dress has long lace sleeves and a plunging v-neckline and a long train! It's tight on top (so we can see how thin she is!) with what looks like a voluminous skirt. She also has a veil over the face. AH!

5:53 a.m. Kate is three times more popular than William, says CNN. Her Rolls Royce has a nice clear top so we can get a good dress preview, and see that her hair is down and she seems to also be wearing a tiara. She's waving so excitedly!

5:59 a.m. Vera Wang is delighted with Kate's choice: it's what she expected, in a good way and she loves the veil. She also thinks Kate's sister and maid of honor Pippa looks lovely in her dress (which we have to say she does — so simple and elegant).

6:00 a.m. Kate is GETTING OUT OF THE CAR. The crowd is going crazy! THE DRESS IS MCQUEEN!

6:02 a.m. Oh my God, McQueen! Now we can all cry! The dress has long lace sleeves, a full skirt that's not too voluminous, with a modest embroidered train. Kate's jewelry is simple, just diamond drop earrings, a modest tiara, and no necklace. Of course she's also wearing the most loaded engagement ring of modern times. She looks so happy! And aren't you? No Issa!

6:05 a.m. Our photo slideshow of all this royal wedding awkwardness is here. Check back for updates as the wedding happens.

6:07 a.m. Kate is walking very slowly down the aisle with her father. Is it just us or is Pippa kind of upstaging her by looking so hot with all those adorable children?

6:08 a.m. No, it's not just us. Harry totally just checked Pippa out as they were walking up.

6:14 a.m. Kate's veil is back and she has her signature somewhat sick-to-her-stomach-with-nerves look on her face. Does the dress feel anti-climactic to anyone?

6:17 a.m. To further the Diana comparisons, Kate is NOT going to mess up the part where she has to talk. (Diana famously mis-stated Prince Charles's full name.)

6:20 a.m. If Kate really did do her own makeup she did a great job. No mascara on the lip gloss and her eyebrows look wonderfully symmetrical.

6:22 a.m. Kate's mom Carole may actually look more scared than her daughter. Unless this is her version of crying without the tears.

6:29 a.m. Actually, maybe Carole just saw Princess Eugenie's absolutely terrifying hat behind her. That thing looks like a petrified octopus.

6:30 a.m. While the boring singing and speeches drag on is a good time to read about THE DRESS! The official royal wedding website has all the details. "Miss Middleton worked closely with Sarah Burton in formulating the design of her dress," it reads. The lace applique on the bodice and skirt were handmade, of course: "Individual flowers have been hand-cut from lace and hand-engineered onto ivory silk tulle to create a unique and organic design, which incorporates the rose, thistle, daffodil and shamrock." The train is two meters, or about 6.5 feet long two meters 70 centimeters, or just under 9 feet long.

6:37 a.m. And onto the CROWN, the royal wedding website says the tiara is Cartier, and loaned to Kate by the queen. "The ‘halo’ tiara was made by Cartier in 1936 and was purchased by The Duke of York (later King George VI) for his Duchess (later Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother) three weeks before he succeeded his brother as King. The tiara was presented to Princess Elizabeth (now The Queen) by her mother on the occasion of her 18th birthday."

6:41 a.m. While Kate and William look bored there in their chairs, CNN reveals what William said to Kate when she got to him at the altar: "You look beautiful." He's so kind. We would have said, "Don't vomit! Only billions of people are watching you!"

6:42 a.m. And back to bridal gear, Kate's EARRINGS were apparently a gift to her from her parents, the royal wedding website says. The "diamond-set stylised oak leaves with a pear shaped diamond set drop and a pavé set diamond acorn suspended in the centre" are by Robinson Pelham. We expect these will be knocked off along with the dress, so future brides will probably basically be able to wear full-on Kate Middleton costumes.

6:46 a.m. The shoes are also handmade by McQueen from ivory duchesse satin with hand-embroidered lace.

6:50 a.m. All the hokey people outside are waving their little flags! Too bad they clash with pastels.

6:53 a.m. Kate is exiting the abbey in dramatic fashion with Pippa, who looks maybe a little too good, firmly in her place behind her holding her train. Kate and William's parents are following them out. Does she now get a moment of privacy in case she actually does need to vomit? She and William have certainly earned some private makeout time at least.

6:58 a.m. Now is a great time for the networks to get some close-up pans of the crowd. The Oscars this most definitely is not. The queen is talking through the choir singing. If anyone else around us was awake (i.e. also cared about this) we'd be doing the same.

7:01 a.m. Is anyone crying yet? If not over the love story that this is hardly the culmination of, the bad hats in the crowd? Or that it's all almost over?

7:05 a.m. Ahhh Kate's back out! And there goes that guy William she just married, all up in her shot.

7:06 a.m. The queen just gave The Dress the eye. She looked intrigued by all that lace detailing. Yes yes! It will still be so interesting for so many more days!

7:08 a.m. Wow, we never realized it before, but seeing Pippa and Harry walking next to each other, they make so much sense. Hotties!

7:10 a.m. And THIS is the moment we've all been waiting for: Kate Catherine getting into her princess carriage to wave to her adoring fans. She looks so beautiful and managed getting into that thing so elegantly. (And finally William gets to put his hat back on.) God she looks so pretty!

7:12 a.m. Carole looks just giddy over all of this as she talks to the queen there. The queen is like, "Yeah yeah."

7:14 a.m. Wow, this is so great, as sick of it as we were before it started. Remember that scene in The Sweetest Thing where Cameron Diaz is fantasizing about a giant ice cream fudge sundae with all the calories removed? This wedding IS THAT ICE CREAM SUNDAE. SO GOOD.

7:17 a.m. Vera Wang thinks Kate made a "very strong personal statement as to who she really is... She's not here to only dress for fashion, shes here to dress for herself in a very elegant and dignified manner, and that speaks volumes about who she really is and the task that lies ahead of her." Vera adds that she loves how the veil (and veils are very "complex to cut") hangs behind her face.

7:20 a.m. Kate and William really lucked out with the weather; the sun is shining on them and their cavalry, which forecasters weren't predicting. As if they needed it with all that radiance!

7:22 a.m. Kate and William are pulling into the palace and the crowd is going crazy! This was totally worth losing sleep over.

7:25 a.m. Harry looked hysterical in his carriage with the little kids. He and Pippa should totally get together and have a brood. They could be like the royal British version of Brad and Angelina.

7:28 a.m. Anderson Cooper says the cavalry's boots are shined with a blow torch that melts the shoe. Wow, Anderson.

7:29 a.m. The CNN anchors are salivating over the thought of seeing Kate and William kiss publicly on the balcony since they never get to do that.

7:31 a.m. Hugo Burnand has an hour to photograph Kate and William. He also shot Prince Charles and Camilla on their wedding day. Word is the last time he had to take such important photos, he had a horn in his hand to keep his subjects at bay.

7:33 a.m. Disco balls are said to be installed in the palace. Oooh!

7:34 a.m. The buses with the royal wedding guests looked ridiculous pulling into the palace after the carriages. They may as well have all rolled up on big wheels.

7:37 a.m. Apparently David Beckham technically made a double fashion faux pas by not wearing his British medals or a top hat. But technically he's also the best looking man at this thing so WHATEVER.

7:42 a.m. NBC is showing reruns of Kate walking down the aisle, in case anyone is waking up late (SHAME).

7:44 a.m. "It feels like Catherine has had quite a heavy hand in this dress," says one of NBC's royal watchers. The feeling on this network is that this gown was more Kate than McQueen, and perhaps a little too traditional.

7:51 a.m. People in the crowd in Hyde Park are wearing veils and tiaras. What do all these people do when they have to go to the bathroom?

7:59 a.m. We still don't know where the couple is going for their honeymoon. Anderson Cooper says they were joking about going to Australia, but his British cohost thinks they're going to go off to one of the British palaces where they can't be photographed. BOO.

8:02 a.m. My boyfriend just rolled out of bed and asked, "Have they gotten married yet?" SOME PEOPLE. Really.

8:04 a.m. See photos of Kate Middleton WEARING HER WEDDING DRESS designed by Sarah Burton in our slideshow.

8:09 a.m. Everyone is very impressed at how perfect Kate was when she got married. (No one is saying they are impressed by William's performance.) In other news, so much for calling her Catherine!

8:12 a.m. In case you care about Piers Morgan's top three best-dressed, they are Kate (duh), Victoria Beckham, and Pippa.

8:14 a.m. NBC has a countdown to the royal kiss. About 10 minutes to go! The crowd is running up to the gates of the palace to see it.

8:15 a.m. How great would it be if Prince Harry and Pippa kissed behind Kate and William? Hey, they could be inside the palace making out right now for all we know.

8:16 a.m. Apparently bookies in London are taking bets on how many seconds the kiss will last. Can they really get away with kissing for eight seconds? No way tongue is involved in this thing.

8:25 a.m. Kate and William are going not the balcony for the kiss! It looked like Kate said, "Oh wow." What a commoner thing to do. Love her!

8:27 a.m. And they kissed! Less than two seconds, obviously.

8:29 a.m. Oh my God they kissed again! Yay! This gives hope that they will make out a little bit.

8:30 a.m. <3 <3 <3!!!

8:31 a.m. And inside the palace they go. That was all so wonderful. Now we can go back to being totally sick of it. Congrats to Will and Kate! And thanks to the royal couple for lending their love and her good looks to such beautiful and perfectly orchestrated photo ops!

10:39 a.m. Kate and William are back out! He's driving her around in a little Aston Martin decorated with ribbons and balloons sticking out the back. SO CUTE. He changed his jacket (yawn) but she is still wearing her full dress and veil, it seems.
