After struggling through a brutal winter, we've met the recent spate of warmer days with (very pale) open arms. But as the days teeter between cold and clammy, wet and windy, and stiflingly muggy, spring weather begins to takes its toll on the skin. Dry patches, breakouts, and dull complexions are common complaints. Thankfully, there are a slew of products designed to tackle these problems. From heavy-duty moisturizers that won't clog pores to gentle exfoliants that won't rub your face raw, check out our list of editor-tested products that span drugstore-friendly brands to worthy investments, all designed to calm finicky spring skin.
Amore Pacific Moisture Bound Rejuvenating Serum
This super-hydrating serum left dull skin dewy and radiant. While it's a pretty hefty investment, testers said it mimicked the feeling of a steam bath, adding a liquid layer of moisture that was absorbed easily without grease. The oil-free treatment is $100, available at Sephora.com.
Sephora Double Duty Exfoliator + Mask & Instant Moisturizer
Our dull skin benefited from the exfoliating and mask combo, sloughing off the dead layers to leave it looking more radiant. The moisturizer was also a winner, absorbing into the skin quickly and softening without any greasy residue. Both can be found at Sephora.com.
Clinique Pore Refining Solutions Correcting Serum
The serum created a smooth base before applying makeup. Though testers didn't detect any reductions in pore size, the serum did leave skin looking more even and refined after repeated use. Find it on Clinique.com for $39.50.
Skyn Iceland Icelandic Relief Eye Cream
The fluffy eye cream has an instant cooling sensation that will soothe puffy eyes without stinging, ideal when spring allergies attack. The formula instantly absorbed and smoothed out crepe-like under-eye skin, allowing concealer to glide on flawlessly. The eye cream is $45 at Sephora and also comes in travel pen form for $20.
Josie Maran Blemishes R Gone Argan Acne Clearing Pads
For the blemish prone, these pads are an easy way to target congested skin by cleansing and moisturizing in one go. Containing salicylic acid to zap blemishes that come with humid muggy weather, they also have argan oil and aloe vera to soothe breakouts. They're $28 at sephora.com.
Noxema Clean Blemish Control Daily Scrub & Deep Cleansing Cream
Drugstore brand Noxzema brings to mind painful teenage years of battling bad skin, but they've also introduced inexpensive adult-friendly products. The new Clean Blemish Control Daily Scrub has microbeads to slough off dead skin while the Deep Cleansing Cream has added moisturizers to rehydrate skin. Both felt nice and light, giving a slight tingle but nothing so strong as to causing peeling or irritation. Available at drugstores and Target.com from $2.99 to $4.99.
REN Hydra-Calm Cleansing Gel
With soothing Neroli oil and chamomile extract as the first two ingredients, this cleanser is ultragentle but effective at getting off layers of sweat and grime. (There's also a creamy milk version, which might feel too gentle once summer humidity kicks in.) Stash in the fridge when it really gets steamy for extra cooling. It's $32 at renskincare.com.
Kiehl Rosa Arctica
The heavy-duty cream is like a moisture bomb for dry skin. It's too intense for day use, but when slathered on at night, this lotion will revive peeling, dull skin by morning. It's $60, available at Kiehl's stores and kiehls.com.
Neutrogena Naturals Fresh Cleaning + Makeup Remover
Jumping on the natural bandwagon, Neutrogena has developed a line that claims no sulfates, parabens, or other scary chemicals. The Naturals Fresh Cleaning + Makeup Remover was a hit, eliminating the need to first remove makeup before cleansing. Plus it's gently priced at $8 and available at target.com and drugstores everywhere.
Clarins UV Plus HP SPF 40 Day Screen & Sunscreen Care Milk Lotion SPF 50+
As tempting as it may be to lay out for a bit of color, sunscreen is especially important on winter-pale skin. The Clarins UV Plus HP SPF 40 Day Screen is odorless and lightweight for the face, absorbing into skin quickly although drying slightly sticky. The Clarins Sunscreen Care Milk Lotion SPF 50+ kept skin moisturized and protected. Clarins UV Plus HP SPF 40 Day Screen, $38.00 and Clarins Sunscreen Care Milk Lotion SPF 50+, $32.00 are both available at Clarins.com.
Perricone MD No Sun Tanner
This delivers moisture as well as color that builds with use. The best part? It smells distinctly not like self-tanner, making it pleasant to slather on. Find it at neimanmarcus.com for $65.
