Simon Doonan Thinks Obama’s Style Is Unremarkable

Barney's Creative Ambassador-at-Large Simon Doonan promotes his book "Gay Men Don't Get Fat" at Barneys New York on January 7, 2012 in New York City.

In a video interview with Slate, Simon Doonan says that politicians have to beware of looking too fashionable, because it makes them seem vain. "They have to be self-denying individuals who are devoted to everything other than vanity," he says. Luckily, our current president follows this rule, even though Simon knows he could make him look better. "Barack Obama has a natural elegance. It would be so easy to put him in to a great cotton khaki suit with flat front pants and aviators. He would look amazing, but he would lose all his credibility as a politician." So, what would happen if we elected someone fashion-forward? "Think about it," says Simon. "The only stylish politicians are dictators."
