France Rethinks Child Beauty Pageants; Females Spend 26 Years With Bad Hair

• For many women who lose their hair during cancer treatments, dyeing it post-treatment becomes a symbol of empowerment. Dr. James Speyer, medical director at the Cancer Institute at NYU says, “How people look is a very important part of their whole approach to the diagnosis of cancer and to the treatment of cancer.” [NYT]

• A poll of 2,000 women revealed that the average British female will spend the equivalent of 26 years with bad hair, and that most wake up with unruly hair at least three days a week — a grand total of 9,828 "bad hair days" based on the average woman’s lifetime of 63 years. [Daily Mail UK]

• Following a complaint to the British Advertising Standards Authority, Avon has been forced to withdraw claims that its cosmetics aren’t tested on animals. [Daily Mail UK]

• A French senator issued a report calling for a ban on child beauty pageants, as well as padded bras and high heels made for young girls. The proposal comes after a 10-year-old girl appeared in French Vogue wearing heels and a provocative outfit last year. [Jezebel]
