"Just when you know what the trends are, Paris comes along and puts a new spin on things," says Roopal Patel, fashion director of Moda Operandi — looks like Balenciaga's metallic animal-print sweatshirts, for example, and McQueen's "magical" fur and feathers. It was a week of smart, wearable separates (the slim pantsuit was huge) and the return of the heel, in two-tone hues and metallics. But the designers also took risks, whether experimenting with scale or high-tech fabrications. Patel's top pieces span leather, lace, and neoprene; click ahead to see more of her Paris must-haves.
"Between Balenciaga and Chanel, there was a lot of this metallic shine happening. Balenciaga's metallic animal prints felt very refreshing — it just looked right — and you felt this superhero quality at Chanel, especially with the layering of the jacket, dress, and pant." Must-have: Balenciaga metallic animal-print (left).
"Power dressing continued to reign in Paris. You saw a very bold, confident woman, from YSL and Givenchy to Céline and Lanvin. The look is the lawyer girl who went out the night before; she's not a wallflower. It was really quite directional. We saw more of the slim silhouette this week." Must-have: Haider Ackermann slim pant (left).
"Peplums are here and they're not going away. Haider Ackermann gave the classic jacket a peplum bottom, paired with the perfect slim pant. We've been such a dress culture for so long, but now it's definitely a return to separates." Must-have: Haider-Ackermann peplum jacket (left).
"At Céline, we saw an explosion of great color in easy silhouettes. The shows were full of flashes of electric color -- beautiful blues and oranges; then that pop of pink at Céline. We also saw more jewel tones, particularly emerald green." Must-have: Céline electric-blue coat (center).
"Blanket stripes emerged throughout the month, from rag & bone to Carven, often in separates and coats. This season, outerwear is just as important as innerwear." Must-have: Carven blanket-stripe jacket (left).
"There was a lot of sportif, from the neoprene fabrics to the sweatshirts. I have to have one of Céline's striped pieces." Must-have: Céline striped top (center).
"Isabel Marant had incredible lace: all of those really pretty, soft blouses, dresses, and skirts. And there was no shortage of beautiful lace at Valentino." Must-have: Isabel Marant lace blouse (left).
"We cannot forget about knits. There was an abundance of great knits this season, from Chloé to Céline to Carven. There are so many to choose from this fall." Must-have: Chloé knit (right).
"It's the return of the heel this season. The idea of two-tone shoes is continuing, and you're also seeing a lot of metallics. There were a lot of black shoes on the runway: black and white, black and gold, black and silver." Must-have: Balenciaga black and white lace-up pump.
Oversized Envelope Clutches
"I like the idea of that overized envelope, almost the size of an attaché case -- you saw them at Céline and Dries van Noten." Must-have: Céline envelope clutch
"There were a lot of great capes this week, but Valentino's was a standout." Must-have: Valentino cape (left)
