One Member of Pussy Riot Freed

A Moscow court of appeals released one member of Pussy Riot, Yekaterina Samutsevich, on probation today, the Guardian reports. Samutsevich brought in two new lawyers earlier this month and argued that because she was kicked out of the cathedral shortly after entering, she did not engage in the “aggressive movements” that offended Russia's Orthodox church. (She still made a very compelling case for the aggressive movements in her closing statement.) All three members argued during their appeal that their protest was political, not religious in nature. The other two members, both of whom are significantly younger than Samutsevich and have young children, will be sent to prison colonies to serve the remainders of their two-year terms.
