An ancient Chinese practice, footbinding originated in the Song dynasty and continued well into the 20th century. Young girls’ toes were broken and bound beneath the sole, restricting growth and deforming the foot. The ideal size was 3 inches – the “golden-lotus” – which was considered highly erotic and could earn a good marriage.
