50 Ugliest Shoes Chopines, circa 16th Century in Italy

Chopines, circa 16th Century in Italy

Venitian chopines were platform overshoes that were the pinnacle of 16th century fashion.  Constructed with bases of cork or metal, and reaching heights up to 20 inches, chopines were worn by Venetian noblewomen as status symbols. Higher shoes indicated higher rank, which is unfortunate for the rich.
