The Cut Holiday Eye Guide: Liquid Liner Tutorial

Photo: Bek Andersen

Liquid liner is basically the red lip for the eye. Not everyone feels like they can pull it off, but come holiday season, everyone feels like they should try it out. It’s festive and goes great with a sparkly dress, but it’s also pretty difficult to apply. So how exactly should a woman wear it?

We hit up Soho’s Space NK beauty boutique and asked four different makeup artists to create an evening makeup look built around liquid liner’s dramatic flair. Nars artist Jenny Smith opted for a moody, deep purple, while Laura Mercier’s Jerry Johnson and Ellis Faas’s Claudia Pinto went the metallic route. Meanwhile, Danny Griffin of Kevyn Aucoin added a multidimensional glossy red lip for the look’s focal point. As it turns out, the red lip still reigns supreme.
