Ultra-Orthodox Women Protest Unorthodox Use of Men’s Prayer Shawl

Ultra-Orthodox girls and women clashed with feminist activist group Women of the Wall in Jerusalem this morning, over the group’s practice of praying at the Western Wall wearing shawls traditionally reserved for men. After a handful of Women of the Wall were arrested in recent years, an Israeli court ruled last month that women praying in non-gender-conforming shawls were not disturbing the peace. According to the New York Times, thousands of women were dispatched by the haredi rabbis that historically control holy sites today to prevent the group from accessing the wall, while men heckled and threw garbage at the group. Three men were arrested. It was Women of the Wall’s first monthly prayer since the restrictions were lifted.
