In June, SVU star and No. 1 imaginary best friend Mariska Hargitay wrote a piece for the Huffington Post about the problem of unprocessed rape kits. Now, according to the Post, she's working on a documentary film about the issue, and is currently searching for a director. An excerpt from her column:

Simply put, the backlog allows rapists to get away with their crimes and, in many cases, to rape again. We cannot know the exact size of the backlog because few jurisdictions count or track their untested kits, but the federal government estimates that there are hundreds of thousands of untested rape kits in police and crime lab storage facilities throughout the United States.
... When you don’t test a rape kit, it sends the message that’s it’s not a serious crime, and I’m beyond outraged.

Detective Benson couldn't have put it better herself. Now we'll get to find out if she wears those pretty little gold necklaces in real life, too.
