What are the traits that make up masculinity? Today the Morning News featured photographer Chad Lee, who puts the question to his subjects — men, women, and transgender people who self-identify as masculine. He meets them through Craigslist and shoots them in self-directed poses that make them feel masculine. Answers vary: men’s clothes, emotional self-sufficiency, “dominating one’s field of study,” and being a ponderous dweeb. Take it from Luke: “I am masculine because I abandon women after taking their love. Because when you study Freud, you don’t let him study you. Because I study philosophy, not literature.” Are you picturing Luke (slide 9) naked but for his socks, clogs kicked off, holding a tumbler of whiskey?
