Day-to-Night Eyes at Derek Lam

For Derek Lam’s spring/summer 2014 show, Tom Pecheux of Estée Lauder created an easy-to-master eye that can transition from work to cocktails to a black-tie event — really. “Women today don’t have the time to go home and redo makeup,” he said. “You just want to be able to add.”

For the show, Tom designed three separate looks using just a few products. The first, for day, was a textured nude eye using an antique gold creme shadow applied for maximum light-catching potential. For a more graphic after-work party eye, Pecheux added navy eyeliner to the same base, drawing what he called a “cube.” “This lifts and pulls like a very modern cat-eye,” he explained. For the last, most glam look inspired by Lam’s amazing evening gowns, the makeup artist layered on the mascara (imperfect application encouraged!) and added more navy blue eyeliner to the lid and water line. The lip, a natural pink gloss, stayed the same. Runway makeup for the working gal? No way we can mess this up.
