In Chicago, one of the few independent bookstores left standing and still profitable is a feminist bookstore called Women and Children First. Opened in 1979, the store managed to find a thriving niche focusing on books written by women, as well as children's books with strong, heroic, brave girl characters. It's become a destination for prominent female authors.
But now, the two savvy owners are ready to retire and hand the store over to the next generation, reports NPR.
Was this just the news you were waiting for on a Monday morning? Fantastic. Fulfill that dream you had where you ran a lovely neighborhood bookstore and fell in love with Tom Hanks and battled Barnes & Noble and won!
