In Chicago, one of the few independent bookstores left standing and still profitable is a feminist bookstore called Women and Children First. Opened in 1979, the store managed to find a thriving niche focusing on books written by women, as well as children's books with strong, heroic, brave girl characters. It's become a destination for prominent female authors.
But now, the two savvy owners are ready to retire and hand the store over to the next generation, reports NPR.
