The popular young Georgian designer David Koma is the new artistic director of Mugler. Congrats! He’ll fill the position vacated by Nicola Formichetti last year, who departed by "mutual agreement." Koma, who lives in London, will start early in January and will present his first collection for resort season in June. The 28-year-old Central Saint Martins grad launched his own label in 2009 – and picked up lots of great reviews and celebrity endorsements (from Rihanna and Beyoncé) almost immediately. Here's what he tweeted this morning:
Deeply honored to take up the role of Artistic Director at Mugler muglerofficial http://t.co/iQS8Dr0uas— DAVID KOMA (@DAVIDKOMALONDON) December 13, 2013
Virginie Courtin-Clarins (the street-style star and the director of development, marketing, and communications at Mugler Fashion) says that Koma is “in the same line as the Mugler DNA, yet he has his own modern and unique vision of a woman” – and that this is a recommitment to the women's ready-to-wear brand, which was shuttered in 2003 and revived in 2008. If it's any indication, Koma's own, sexy, cutout-heavy spring 2014 collection seems right up Mugler's alley.
