Victoria Beckham Hated Her Girl-Power Prison

The world of the Spice Girls seemed like a magical, happy, fun land, but Victoria Beckham spent some of her tenure as a pop icon dying on the inside, she reveals in an interview in the December issue of French Vogue. Even her character, the sullen LBD-wearing Posh Spice, was a projection of her inner turmoil, like reverse clown makeup: “I had to invent a character and I thought of that: staring at people and pouting,” she said.

It wasn’t until the 2008 Spice Girls reunion that she realized how miserable she was: “It should have been the best moment of my life, but I just wanted to be elsewhere,” she adds. “It wasn’t a lack of respect for the girls or the audience, but the passion just wasn’t there.” Alas, Beckham may never sing-speak through “2 Become 1” again, but the fact that people gasp every time she cracks a slight smile (Posh can smile? Who knew!) shows that she will never truly break free of her “Girl Powah!” shackles.
