First Lady Michelle Obama and guests applaud during President Barack Obama State of the Union address on Capitol Hill in Washington, Tuesday Jan. 28, 2014. Jill Biden with her left arm in a cast is at far right.

First Lady Michelle Obama chose a conservative emerald dress and sweater set for Tuesday's State of the Union. According to the Financial Times's Vanessa Friedman, the design is from the French designer Azzedine Alaïa — a curious move for the State of the American Union, she pointed out. (A defiant return to the power belts of the first term?) Among those seated in FLOTUS's skybox were openly gay former NBA player Jason Collins, marathon bombing survivors Carlos Arredondo and Jeff Bauman, GM's first female CEO Mary Barra, and Sabrina Jenkins, a veteran and single mom featured the recent Shriver Report on women on the brink
