Abortion Will Stay Barely Legal in Texas

The 5th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the draconian Texas abortion restrictions that catapulted Wendy Davis into the national political spotlight. The bad news is that the law — which bans abortions after 20 weeks and requires abortion providers to have unnecessary admitting privileges at local hospitals — has already closed a third of the state’s clinics and will leave millions of rural Texans without access to abortions, possibly driving them to Mexican border towns where they can obtain them illegally and dangerously. The good news is that because other federal courts disagree, the law is probably going to the Supreme Court.
