Chelsea Handler Defied Anna Wintour

Don’t hold your breath for Chelsea Handler’s Vogue cover. The late-night host told Paper Magazine that fashion is “not real,” and the fashion show she once attended was “the worst nightmare I could have ever been to.” Same goes for the Met Ball, which she attended with then-boyfriend André Balazs in 2012. She recalled:

“I was like, ‘Why am I here?’ I didn’t have fun. I have no idea what the theme was, nor did I care.”

The theme was “Prada and Schiaparelli: Impossible Conversations.”

“I was like, ‘Why am I here?’ I didn’t have fun. I have no idea what the theme was, nor did I care.”

“I know that I wore motorcycle boots under my Roland Mouret gown. I think it was a Roland Mouret and Anna Wintour was like, ‘She cannot wear motorcycle boots.’ I’m like, ‘Well then I’ll wear them so I can guarantee never getting invited again.’”

Which is too bad, since Handler definitely could have gotten away with motorcycle boots at the following year’s punk-themed ball. Then maybe she would have a more positive association with the fashion world.

Speaking of punk: Handler did not miss an opportunity to trash her network, E!, by hinting that she’s working on a Netflix project. “I’m on a network that doesn’t get a lot of people watching, so all my people, I’m bringing in,” she said. “So if I’m doing that on that network, imagine what I could be doing where there are viewers.”
