Welcome to the next installment of Hair Days' "Ask a Stylist" with Wesley O'Meara, a stylist who counts Alexa Chung, Kate Upton, and Sarah Jessica Parker as clients and who blogs at We Hate Your Hair. Each week, O'Meara shares styling advice about looks we're trying to pull off.

If you are trying out a new stylist, what are the telltale signs you've picked the right one? Or just someone who doesn’t suck? What are the warning signs?

Stick to like-minded individuals! But, it is tricky. I know some pretty chic people who actually have terrible taste. This is mostly trial and error. But, I can say with confidence that if your male stylist has on square-toed shoes or a sudden Ed Hardy shirt, cancel your appointment. Best to ask someone on the street with a cut or color you admire who they see. Word of mouth is a huge part of the hair industry! Or choose a neighborhood that caters to the type of women who have a look you desire. For instance, for model-off-duty hair … not wise to get your cut on the Upper East Side.
