I Spy an Awesome Spa

What was it that the great poet John Keats once wrote of beauty? “Its loveliness increases; it will never pass into nothingness …” He was on to something: There’s no finer way to spoil yourself on a special occasion than with dazzling jewelry. (May we suggest Tiffany Celebration®Rings?) With that key detail out of the way, you’re all set to pamper yourself at a lazy-day spa experience. That’s right, we said, “experience.” After one visit to any of these inimitable locales, you’ll emerge a changed woman.

New York
Aire Ancient Baths
Housed in a textile factory from the 1800s, this breathtaking retreat is not only inspired by Greco-Roman era baths—it one-ups them. Here, you have your pick of pools: one heated to 102 degrees and another chilled to 46 degrees, one filled with calming saltwater and another awakened by rollicking jet streams. Four-handed massages and red wine soaks will cost you extra, but morning yoga sessions come gratis.

Los Angeles
Voda Spa

The Russian word for “water,” Voda is built around the concept of an old banya, or purifying sauna. The pair here—one wet, one dry—is heated by scorching rocks and scented with aromatic oils. The culturally intrepid can also partake in platza, a storied treatment (and daily special!), which roughly translates as: “getting your blood flowing by being whacked with oak or birch leaves in a super-hot sauna.”

Chicago
Allyu

At Allyu (Get it? “All you”?), perks run the gamut from ancient chakra balancing treatments to newfangled infrared sauna therapies. Reflexology therapies are designed to remedy things like—who knew?—ADD and sleep disorders. There are also couples-based treatments, but we’re heartened by the sprawling menu of deals designed for those flying solo.

Miami
Canyon Ranch

Seventy thousand square-feet near the beach doesn’t sound like a tough sell. Still, the assortment of hyper-specific water-based treatments remains the big draw at Canyon Ranch. Fancy a quartz-crystal-light-refracted steam room? A menthol’d igloo? A shower inspired by a Caribbean monsoon? It’s all here. If your imagination is reeling now, that’s okay. The Canyon Ranch staff can figure out your visit for you with “One Perfect Spa Day” packages.

San Francisco
SenSpa

Words like “healing” and “soothing” get bandied about a lot in SenSpa’s list of offerings, and for good reason. You can globetrot your way from a Swedish senstone therapy to a Chinese gua sha stone massage, and from an Indian lotus Ayurvedic ritual to Hawaiian Island indulgence healing treatment. Decisions!
