How to Make Miley Cyrus’s Jewelry by Yourself

Last week Miley Cyrus debuted her raver-inspired accessory collaboration with Jeremy Scott, entitled “Dirty Hippie.” You may be wondering what exactly is “dirty” or “hippie” about hot-gluing plastic trinkets procured from the party-supply section of Target to other plastic trinkets. Or perhaps you’re questioning if something that looks like your 6-year-old niece halfheartedly made it at day camp can truly be considered art. If so, we suggest you think like Cyrus, who said of her art-making process: “I had a bunch of fucking junk and shit, and so instead of letting it be junk and shit, I turned it into something that made me happy.”

Today we show you how to turn a bunch of junk and shit into wearable masterpieces — a scrunchie, a bracelet, a necklace, and sunglasses. Read on to learn how to make Miley’s jewelry at home in a few easy steps.

1. Thread and knot the needle. Pull it through the inside of the scrunchie. String enough beads through the needle to match the length of the scrunchie. Sew through the opposite side, making one long stitch of beads, and knot securely.

Repeat until the entire scrunchie is covered with lengths of beads.

2. Stitch pom-poms around the entire top perimeter of the scrunchie.

3. Attach trinkets such as key chains and plastic jewelry to the strands of beads or stitch directly to the scrunchie.

Supplies needed:

—String

—Assorted plastic beads

—Assorted children’s party favors or trinkets with stringable holes (i.e., key chains, Slinkys, etc.)

—Scissors

1. Cut a length of string about 16–18 inches long and knot the end enough times to be able to secure beads.

2. String on an assortment of beads, adding a trinket every 2–3 inches. Knot to secure and tie the ends together.

Supplies Needed:

—Elastic string

—Alphabet beads

—Assorted plastic beads

—Scissors

1. Cut a length of string about four inches longer than your desired bracelet length.

2. Before beading, arrange the alphabet-letter beads into the word of your choice alongside the string to determine how much space should be left for surrounding colored beads.

3. String the colored beads, followed by alphabet beads, and finish with colored beads until an inch of string is left. Knot securely.
