Your Next Boyfriend Probably Won’t Be Named Gary

Do you have a friend or a boyfriend named Gary? Probably not. While Gary was once one of the most popular male names (enjoying a heady period of favor in the 1940s and 1950s), times are now tough for Gary: It is among the least popular names to give a baby, coming in at 578th place in the U.S.

Gary, which means "spear," is a fine and sturdy name of Germanic origin. But it’s pretty hard to imagine a baby or a peer named Gary, and it won't get easier anytime soon, since we are failing to replace our Garys as they age. (In 2013, fewer than 450 Garys were born in the U.S., with just 28 in the U.K.) So, no, you probably won’t date a Gary.
