Tracing the Bedazzled Evolution of Men’s Fashion

Before men wore platinum dreads, Pac-Man suits, and that one gingham shirt, they wore three-piece suits, embroidered vests, and lots of sparkle. Reigning Men: Fashion in Menswear, 1715-2015out from Prestel on April 15, is the visual accompaniment to a Los Angeles County Museum of Art exhibition.

The story begins back when menswear was the center of the sartorial world, tracing its evolution from beaded silk slippers to patent-leather combat boots. Present-day dissenters to the male uniform — the likes of Kean Etro and Jeremy Scott — also get their fair share of the exhibition.
