Taylor Swift Wore Grunge Because Anna Wintour Said So

At Anna Wintour’s pre–Met Gala party on Sunday night, hosted at the editor’s Soho townhouse, Taylor Swift showed up along with Bella Hadid, the Weeknd, and Tom Hiddleston. In a departure from her usual style (chokers, glitter, eighth-grade lockets), Swift, surprisingly, wore grunge: a plaid flannel dress (a.k.a., a picnic blanket) with combat boots. Why? It’s been asked before: How do you convince Anna Wintour you’re Vogue material (or, in Swift’s case, worthy of being her Met Gala co-chair)? You dress exactly how it seems she wants you to.

Last month Wintour explained Swift’s “new look” for Vogue’s May cover story on the Today show (you know, that cover where Swift brought a Vogue reporter to her best friend’s wedding): “We very much wanted to give Taylor a new look, make her into a sort of a rock n’ roll chick … We love the way she looks, we think she looks young and modern and different and I can’t wait to see what she’s going to wear on May 2.” No pressure? Swift wore “rock-and-roll chick” flannel twice yesterday.
