These Witches Dancing to German Reggae Are Having More Fun Than You

Look, I’m going to be totally honest with you. I wanted to take German in college, mostly so I could understand the lyrics of Einstürzende Neubauten, but the class was every Monday at 9 a.m. So here I am, years later, watching this video of delightful witches dancing to German reggae and trying to parse the Walpurgis Wolfshagen site, and I’m questioning every decision I made that led me to this moment. Because I want to know. I want to know everything about this.

As far as I can gather, this is just one of many videos from a righteous Walpurgisnacht party in the city of Wolfshagen im Harz in Germany, but who’s to say? This is like seeing Blixa Bargeld perform live all those years ago and so wishing he could murmur sweet nothings to me in his mother tongue. Alas!

Walpurgisnacht, also known as Walpurgis Night, takes place on the night of April 30, and although it’s technically Saint Walpurga’s feast day, it has more to do with pagan traditions along the lines of Beltane and May Day — basically, an awesome holiday celebrating fertility by way of dancing, drinking, and schtupping. Or winding ribbons around a suggestively phallic pole, chilling with a sexy goat, or burning a dull virgin police officer alive in a giant Wicker Man.
