22 Intimate Lost Photos of Marilyn Monroe

By now most portraits of Marilyn Monroe are widely seen — except for a batch discovered by the wife of fashion photographer Andre de Dienes. In 1945, an eager 19-year-old Monroe auditioned for the artist, who was looking to cast an experimental nude project. She never ended up posing for him in the buff, but de Dienes’s sessions — shot on Malibu and Long Island beach trips, and using a car headlight in a Beverly Hills valley to light Monroe’s face — capture Monroe’s vulnerability better than anyone else. See the intimate images — impressively surreal considering they predate Photoshop — from de Deienes’s book Marilyn in our slideshow ahead.

Andre de Dienes: Marilyn and California Girls is on view starting today at Steven Kasher Gallery in New York City.
