The Most Dramatic Backstage Photos You’ll See All Fashion Month

Photo: Landon Nordeman

Before turning to fashion photography, Landon Nordeman shot events like the Westminster Kennel Club dog show for newspapers. Now he’s a fixture backstage at fashion shows in New York, London, Paris, and Milan (and he’s often photographed those shows for the Cut).

Using a bright flash and the same 35mm lens, Nordeman has captured personalities like Diane von Furstenberg and André Leon Talley. He’s shot Iris Apfel sitting front row in Paris and a glossy-lipped Lindsey Wixson modeling rose-colored Chanel. He says he’s most “drawn to characters and eccentrics who are unafraid to express themselves through their fashion.” For him, that makes Thom Browne, Jeremy Scott, Rick Owens, and Proenza Schouler shows ideal — for the designers’ bright color palettes and overall spectacle.

Landon Nordeman: Out of Fashion, the photographer’s first book, is out today from Damiani. Click ahead to see a model wrapped in Iris van Herpen, Grace Coddington’s iconic hair, and the most appealing plate of backstage eclairs you’ve ever seen. Nordeman will join the Cut’s editorial director Stella Bugbee for a conversation and book signing at the Rizzoli bookstore on October 11.
