Please Let This Hangover-Free Alcohol Be Ready for the Holidays

Sad fact: Short of drinking less, there’s really no way to prevent a hangover. But that may not be true in the future.

David Nutt, a professor of neuropsychopharmacology at Imperical College London and a former drugs adviser to the British government, is working on a compound called alcosynth that would mimic the positive effects of drinking booze as far as your brain is concerned and would spare you the headaches, nausea, and dry mouth that can follow. Essentially, hangover-free alcohol.

Nutt told The Independent that he’s patented about 90 alcosynth compounds and is currently testing two of them for widespread use. One is almost tasteless but the other is a little bitter. It’s his hope that alcosynth will completely replace alcohol by 2050 and thereby reduce the public-health impact of long-term heart and liver damage caused by alcohol.

I await the day that I can drink like a 21-year-old again. Until then, there’s always Pedialyte.
