Tina Fey Defends Jimmy Fallon’s Trump Interview: ‘It’s Not Jimmy Who Peed in the Punch Bowl’

Who could’ve know anyone would look back at Tina Fey’s genuinely savage Sarah Palin impression and consider it tepid? That’s how much things have changed in the last eight years. “This election is so, so ugly. It’s not business as usual,” the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt creator said, according to Deadline, at this weekend’s Produced by New York conference. Comparing her experience of doing political satire to today’s presidential race, Fey declared, “It was like an ice cream social.” Fey also took a moment to defend fellow Weekend Update anchor Jimmy Fallon, who took a fair amount of heat for palling around with Donald Trump during his Tonight Show interview. “I really felt for Jimmy when people were so angry,” she explained. “It’s not Jimmy who peed in the punch bowl. It’s not Jimmy who created this horrible world we’re living in.” Which of course begs the question: At what point does a punch bowl become just a gigantic bowl of pee everyone continues to serve one another out of? Forty percent pee-by-volume? Sixty percent?
