Season after season, Mary Katrantzou chooses unusual inspiration for her signature digital prints. Once it was typewriters, another time it was perfume bottles; and for next spring, she’s borrowing from the boys. Drawing inspiration from men’s shoes, the collection opened with a halter dress featuring the blown-up image of a wingtip. Looks then segued into separates that highlighted everything from the buckles of a monk strap to the eyelets of a brogue. But before it became too masculine, Katrantzou went back to her feminine roots, closing with series of cocktail dresses that went heavy on the girlish embellishments. Beading, both real and printed, mixed with oversize ruffles and voluminous yet short silhouettes to create confections that verged on couture. Not a surprise since they also happened to be inspired by the legendary French embroidery house Lesage.
