Billy Reid chose to present only his spring 2014 menswear collection during New York Fashion Week; those who wanted to see his womenswear could do so by appointment. The result was a much more streamlined, coherent, and relaxed runway show, staged on the roof of the McKittrick Hotel while jazz musician Jon Batiste (who grew up an hour away from Reid in Alabama) performed live with his band. Male models, many with beards or long, scruffy hair, strode out in lush, sturdy suits, rendered in soft-looking wools and faded linens. There were more casual options than usual, too, like lots of cotton shorts, striped knit sweaters, bucket hats, and even a camouflage poncho -- perhaps owing to Reid's self-professed California inspiration.
