What Is It With Thais and Cowboys?

If you caught the cult Thai spaghetti Western Tears of the Black Tiger a few years back, you won’t be surprised to learn there’s a working cattle ranch just outside Bangkok. Farm Chokchai (farmchokchai.com) was founded in 1957 by Chokchai Bulakul, who, says Jack Prinya, a news anchor on MET 107 radio, “had a passion for cowboys back when Thais had no idea what a cowboy was.” Now they come in droves to ride tractors and watch cowboys and cowgirls work a lariat. “Tourists go for the steak and the ice cream—which is pretty good, by the way—and to take pictures on bales of hay.”
