Winter 2014 travel tout

It’s hard not to feel like a tourist in a beach town, what with all the time-shares, celebrity-chef restaurants, and pop-up shopping villages. But just as the shrewd traveler jetting to, say, Paris would forego the concierge in favor of a discerning Parisian’s recommendation for where to get foie gras, a trip to a sandy, sunny non-city becomes much more satisfying when the locals weigh in. Which is why we sought out a slew of such insiders to create itineraries for six beach destinations: from boating with crocs and diving the quiet coral reefs of Curaçao, to lazing in natural whirlpools and picking macadamias in New Zealand’s protected Coromandel Peninsula, to finding New Age-y enclaves and farm-to-table restaurants away from the honeymooning masses in Maui.
