Arts Festivals
New York may be the cultural capital of the world the rest of the year, but come summer, the city's dancers, actors, and musicians take to the hills. That doesn't mean you have to suffer without, however. Just find out where they went and follow. Here's our shortlist of summer arts festivals within striking distance of the city.

What's on: Premieres of two Brian Friel plays, new piece by Ping Chong, and Three Tales, a new multimedia work by Steve Reich and video artist Beryl Korot (May 23 through June 9).

Williamstown Theatre Festival
Williamstown, Mass.

What's on: Premieres by Eric Bogosian, Donald Margulies, Alfred Uhry, and Cheryl L. West -- plus revivals of Loot, Once in a Lifetime, and Where's Charley? (June 12 through August 23).
