Ananda Ashram, Catskills

Indian in spirit, the lakefront Ananda is run by disciples of guru Sri Brahmananda Sarasvati. They offer special seminars like the Ayurveda in Daily Life program as well as a set weekend program: Arrive at the wooded, 85-acre retreat Friday even-ing for dinner and kirtan (devotional singing), followed by two yoga classes on both Saturday and Sunday. Ananda also offers guided meditation and Sanskrit classes, plus a wellness center with Ayurveda facials and massages.

Ananda is one hour by car (845-782-5575; anandaashram.org); dormitory and semiprivate rooms are offered, plus camping, but no private bathrooms (from $120 for the weekend); tuition ranges from $75 to $425.
