The Five-Point Weekend Escape Plan

Go Beyond the Sand in Bermuda

With jungle treks, hidden grottoes, and incoming celebrity chefs, Britain's island paradise has far more than great beaches.

1. Where to Stay

Enjoy a tranquil pink sand view from the airy rooms at Elbow Beach.

Think pink at Elbow Beach (from $365), which has the longest stretch of rosy sand of any hotel on the island, plus 98 bungalow-style rooms and a 50-acre garden. Spring for an Ocean Room so you can contemplate the Atlantic from the comfort of Ploh bed linens, and sip rum swizzles ($10.50) in the sand at Mickey’s Beach Bistro, the only restaurant in Bermuda located directly on the beach. Don’t miss the spa, which has six suites with private granite bathrooms and oceanfront patios.

Wear your boat shoes to Fairmont Hamilton Princess (from $519), a grand dame in the midst of a $90 million refurbishment that already has a new infinity pool and 60-slip marina on Hamilton Harbor. Request a room in the newly renovated Poinciana Wing, which has deluxe digs with Le Labo bath products, Dedon outdoor furniture on private balconies, and vintage Bermuda tourism posters on silver-gray walls.

Live like a local at this Airbnb rental (from $200) in St. David’s, a community that’s like the Bermudian equivalent of Red Hook (if turquoise waters surrounded the Ikea compound). The contemporary one-bedroom apartment has a sleek pool directly overlooking the Narrows, a tranquil strait across from Smith Island, and is a short walk to the beach. The owner arranges complimentary airport transfers, and can also set up on-site spa appointments, private dining with local chefs, or twilight movies on the pool deck (prices vary by season and are available upon request).
