The Five-Point Weekend Escape Plan

Glimpse a Disappearing London

ShareThis

5. Oddball Day

Relax on the Thames (left); toast your nautical adventure at Trafalger Tavern (right).

See London from the water. Pack a picnic lunch with supplies from gourmet deli Food Hall (374-378 Old St., 20-7729-6005) in Shoreditch and then rent a handmade wooden punt from East London Boats ($29 per hour). The shallow, poled boats fit six and have been used since medieval times to transport goods — and people — through the city’s waterways. (Call 24 hours ahead to secure someone else to “chauffeur” your punt for an extra $19 an hour.) In the afternoon, take the Thames Clippers ferry from Tower Pier to Greenwich Pier ($8.25 each way) to finish the day with a few waterside pints. The beautifully restored, Regency-style Trafalgar Tavern is a 170-year-old pub once frequented by Charles Dickens.
