Embrace NoCal’s locavore mentality at Baxter’s Bistro & Lounge, which opened in December 2009. Chef Mark Estee’s menu is sourced from local purveyors, like braised short ribs from 5 Dot Ranch ($28) and Sonoma Range Chicken ($24).

Taste Napa and Sonoma wines (from $2 each) at the candlelit wraparound bar at Bite, a small-plates bar with an American and French bistro-inspired menu.

Catch Tahoe’s best après-ski deal at Mamasake, a casual sushi bar at the base of Squaw Valley. From 3 to 5 p.m., pay $5 for a can of Bud and a salmon hand roll, spicy tuna hand roll, or an order of the (better-than-it-sounds) Mama’s Balls: minced shrimp, kani, tuna, tofu, and tempura.
