Mark Garrison’s new salon looks like an Ian Schrager hotel gone uptown: Upper East Side townhouse setting, white walls, frosted glass. At 7,000 square feet, 46 stations, and five floors, it’s double the size of Garrison’s old Madison Avenue home and a testament to the skill with which he’s tended to A-list tresses (Ashley Judd, Sandra Bullock, Matthew McConaughey) for the past seven years. What sets Garrison ($275) apart from his peers is the simple fact that almost every afternoon, he can actually be found overseeing his crew in person—a rarity for any celebrity, let alone a hairdresser.

Where can you find the city’s top dog groomer? Last-minute tailor? Beef tongue? We eat, drink, dance, shop, shvitz, and trampoline our way around the city, not to mention poll scores of in-the-know colleagues, hard-partying friends, opinionated family members, and, this year, a team of guest expert bloggers to bring you answers to all of the above questions, and hundreds more, in the form of our annual “Best of New York” issue.
