If ever there were a neighborhood in need of more restaurants, it’s the Upper West Side. Happily avoiding the feel of either a sports bar or a pickup joint, Nice Matin breezily balances the informality of the surrounding area with the seductive variety of chef Andy d’Amico’s Mediterranean-accented cooking. Sit under its weird white chandelier and savor ravioli flecked with sage and orange. Lounge outside and enjoy sweetly grilled bass necklaced with artichokes. No, you won’t feel like you’re seaside in Nice. The exhaust from the crosstown bus kills that illusion. But how cool is it to have such a nice time not that far from home?

Our mission this year: to hunt down not just the best but the best values in the eating, shopping, drinking, and general-consuming universe of New York. It’s quite the process, this, requiring eating and shopping and drinking (all in the name of research), followed by heated but civil discussion, and heated but less-civil discussion, until a winner emerges in each category.
