Best Reasonable Hotels

You don't need us to tell you where to find a luxury hotel in New York. There are dozens of them. But what if all you need is a modest place at a price that won't send your midwestern relatives into apoplectic shock? Here are our favorites, by neighborhood.

Upper West Side
Quality Hotel
215 West 94th Street, 212-866-6400
All 348 rooms at the Quality Hotel on Broadway were renovated in 1999, and you won't find rates this low — starting from $79 — anywhere else on the Upper West Side.

Comfort Inn Midtown
129 West 46th Street, 212-221-2600

The lobby of the Comfort Inn Midtown is very stylish for a budget hotel, and while the décor doesn't carry through to the rooms, $89 gets you a clean room, breakfast, and access to a fitness center.

Mayfair New York
242 West 49th Street, 212-586-0300
Staying near the shows usually means high prices and street noise. But the Mayfair tempers both, with rates from $100 and soundproof windows.

Chelsea Savoy Hotel
204 West 23rd Street, 212-929-9353
The banklike exterior of the Chelsea Savoy may be less than inspiring, but the trendy address is hard to beat, and, at less than $150 a night, so is the price.

East Village
Howard Johnson Express Inn
135 East Houston Street, 212-358-8844
Howard Johnson might seem too tacky for SoHo, with its red-white-and-blue neon sign, but its 46 rooms are only three months old, superclean, and just $119 a night.
