Thank heaven for Jane Mayle’s jewel box of a boutique that, after five years, still sells clothes that evoke lots of envious cries of “Where did you get that?” The store has moved down a few doors and grown since its bare-bones beginnings—when stock might have consisted of one dress, a silk camisole, and some lanky flat-front trousers—and it now offers, season after season, one-stop shopping for downtown cool with an eclectic look. You’ll find lace skirts ($415), ladylike silk blouses in beautiful prints and colors ($270 and up), and shrunken knits ($148 and up)—all in a stylishly shabby setting that makes shopping anywhere else seem utterly ordinary.

Our mission this year: to hunt down not just the best but the best values in the eating, shopping, drinking, and general-consuming universe of New York. It’s quite the process, this, requiring eating and shopping and drinking (all in the name of research), followed by heated but civil discussion, and heated but less-civil discussion, until a winner emerges in each category.
