Best Handmade Mattreses

  • Hästens ABC Carpet & Home

    888 Broadway, at 19th St,; 212-473-3000, ext. 341

A high-end mattress is something like a bespoke suit: handmade from the best available materials and designed to last almost a lifetime. Hästens, the stuff of dreams, is a 150-year-old Swedish company that set up shop on the upper mezzanine level of ABC Carpet & Home last year. The mattresses here have no foam, rubber, or latex; they’re stuffed with horsehair, flax, and lamb’s wool, covered in hand-tufted cotton, and finished with a salt-based fire retardant. This makes for what the company calls a “cool, dry bed,” and what anyone who’s slept on one calls heaven. Pillow-top mattresses cost $420 and up; sets start at $2,900. Queen- and king-size mattresses are available for immediate delivery; custom-orders take about ten weeks.
