5 Truly Fine Summer Wines

1 2000 Moscato D'Asti, De Forville (about $14). A sparkling wine that's highly perfumed and a little bit sweet. Everyone always likes it, even the people who say, "Oh, no, no, I only like dry." Serve it with honeydew and prosciutt0 -- heaven on earth.

2 1998 Cidre, Eric Bordelet (about $14). Sparkling ciders are a great alternative to wine or beer. One glass is a pick-me-up, but you'll often find yourself going back for a second or third -- even in the middle of the day.

3 1999 Reisling Spätlese, Robert Weil (about $25). German Reislings are magnificent -- the best -- value white wines in the world. They're handcrafted and very versatile. It's harder to find a food that doesn't go well with a Reisling than to find one that does.

4 1999 Crozes Hermitage, Alain Graillot (about $22). It's peppery and spicy, medium -- and full-bodied -- all at the same time. It's good with barbecued meats or anything with a marinade or for just drinking on its own.

5 1999 Vacqueyras, Clos de Caveau (about $17). It's a hearty red wine -- a blend of Grenache and Syrah -- with aromas of crushed red and black berries and fruit.
