I have to disagree with the previous review. The Museum of the City of New York is a gem, comfortably overlooked in favor of all of the other museums in that area. I saw the Manhattan grids exhibit earlier this year, and it was fascinating. The museum did a great job, pulling together great photos, maps, and historical documents to paint a picture of what Manhattan was like before, during, and after its grid system. It really made me appreciate the enormity of this city's urban design. Since the grid, NYC has continued to be a city where audacious epic scale projects - some good, some terrible - have gone up, from the Brooklyn Bridge to those of Robert Moses, to the World Trade Center.

This is a pretty poor reflection of New York City. This is one of-if not the-most exciting city in the world - why is it's Museum so dull? Perhaps my hopes were too high for this Museum, but come on, some of the wall labels have misspellings and the permanent exhibitions look like they are left over from 1975. What a let down. The New York Historical Society is more interesting.
