A Cinephile's Dream Come True

  • Yes, I would go back!

I stumbled upon Spectacle Theater in the best way possible. I was simply walking down South 3rd in Williamsburg, noticed a 'Metropolis' poster hanging inside of a window, and a batch of calendars on a little slot on the door. I grabbed one and lost it when I saw what they had on their November schedule! Now the 'Metropolis' poster was for the Brooklyn premiere screening of a re-scored version done by a bunch of crazy 80s artists (Pat Benatar, anyone?) that I immediately went to the next night, but the theme for the entire month of November, however, was coming-of-age, and they literally had films from all over the world showing... stuff that I'd never heard of before, stuff that I'd heard of but always wanted to see... simply amazing. I finally got the chance to see A Swedish Love Story on a nice big screen! The staff who works there also book the films and events apparently, and they were very sweet and welcoming. They really know their stuff, but certainly aren't snobby about it. They also do one-off special event screenings and live scores. What diversity! All the movies and events are $5 too, which is insane for Williamsburg, yet makes it that much better for what you get. I will definitely be going back. A true gem in the neighborhood.
