The UES is replete with overcrowded, demographically homogenous bars where drunk twentysomethings bump into me, spilling their vodka-Red Bulls unapologetically. They're looking for the place "to be seen at". I much prefer D&E's because It's the perfect place "to HANG". It's a wonderfully comfy, homey tavern where I can sit outside and have a smoke, drinking excellent, cold drafts of Belgian summer ales or a pitcher of Caribbean Tea (5 liquors!), or I can "chill" inside playing pool, listening to Springsteen on the juke, chasing pre-chilled shots of Jager with a $4 bottle of, yes, Grolsch!! I can watch the Yankees in hi-def, and play Buck Hunter during the seventh inning stretch? When I'm hungry, I can have my own barbeque on the grill in the backyard. Not just a "kiddie" bar, the ages range from 24 to 60, and the backgrounds run from people who live within blocks, downtown folk who found out about D&E's through friends, or, and most enjoyable, foreigners, mostly European, who were referred by friends who had visited the city previously (must be that whole "smoking while drinking" thing!). What else do I need...?!
