Open Letter to Harlem's Moca Lounge (excerpt)

Imagine my surprise when I was refused entry due my head being covered. It would have been nice to have been alerted about this policy before having made the trip from Brooklyn. However, nowhere on your website is there a stated dress code. I suppose I'm to conclude that any brother (or perhaps sister, though I'm thinking a traditional double standard is in effect) deeply into Rastafarianism or Islam or Judaism may as well forget about enjoying a relaxed evening among black brethren at your establishment. This could be the best weekly poetry event I've ever attended. Or it could be the absolute worst. And this could be the best lounge I've ever been to, the best gathering of black folk, the place where I've easily been inspired the most, been the most creative, met the most gifted and beautiful black brethren. But I have no way of knowing. Or, at this point, of even caring. for the full letter, follow this link: http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=44764611&blogID=425085847

If I could rate Moca a zero, I would

Last night, my sister and I visited Moca lounge in Harlem. Unknowingly, we were unaware of the lack of customer service we were going to receive. We were politely greeted and seated on the couches. However, we much more perferred the bar area. Upon viewing an opeing at the bar we took a seat. 5 mins after sitting at the bar, a bar maid, named Karen advised us that we could not sit there. Why? We assume she was saving the seat for her high tipping customer's, which is quite unfair. Not only did she ask us to move, but when we didn't she began rushing us and talking loudly about us. She later began to eat off a customer's plate while continuing to serve drinks and utilized her cell phone every so often. Come to find out she was the manager of the establishment. I will never vist this place again!!!!!!!!!!

The management in Moca is terrible. How are you going to kick out a person for wearing a armless sweater. I mean a sweater. I was a loyal customer. I dropped a lot of money on Moca mainly because it was a Black business. But they could care less. The bar staff is great. But the management is terrible. In this bad economy I can definitely spend my money where it is appreciated.

This place will never make it

The guy on the door is a tool. We had a group of Columbia grad school students, future presidents and whatnot, and the guy turned half of us down arbitrarily. It was a birthday party on a holiday, no line at moca, not a lot of people inside. We would have easily brought $500-$1000 to the place in one night, not counting return visits as Harlem residents. But they've lost us to Harlem tavern. Get better door service, downtown has better judgment and there's a lot more people beating down their doors.

Have a "Booty Call"!

Moca is and will always be a recommended spot to friends who are visiting from out of town. It's conveniently located near the the Magic Johnson Theater and the A-B-C-D train station...PERFECT! It is a neighborhood/local spot, so when you walk in and look around, you'll see some locals. "Well, how do they look", you may ask. The clientele is well dressed (as expected) and always looks like they are stopping by after work. Moca's environment is sexy and calm. The lights are low and the seats invite conversation. Moca's menu is fair...not great, but fair. It's a good spot to stop by on your way to someplace else. I often order the catfish strips that come with fries. It's perfect for a hearty snack to eat as you have a drink. I highly recommend the "Booty Call"....it's sweet and hard at the same time;) The staff is attentive and keeps busy. I like Moca;)

The profile does not do this place justice. I am proud to have quality places like Moca in my own backyard. It's my new Friday hangout. It's swanky, chic, and laid back.Cool to the core like only Harlem can do. The decor awesome, never overdoing it.The crowd is definitely upscale, smart, and sexy. Bring your club clothes. Btw, this is not a club...it's a lounge with a small dance area near the DJ but that's more than enough for me. The drinks are perfectly mixed, never bland. Get the "Multiple Orgasm"...you won't regret it.The staff is attentive and real friendly.Don't get put off by the pat down. This is just to weed out the riff-raffs. You gotta come to Moca!

Refreshing

My lady and I stumbled into Moca on a night when they were having an erotic poetry...awesome and tasteful. We definitely planned to go back. When We did, they were having a comedy night which was great, we laughed all night, and were entertained by great music. The drinks and food were good, and we thoroughly enjoyed the mature crowd. I'd highly recommend Moca Lounge to anyone looking to have a good time any day of the week!
